Adoption Fundraising Frequently Asked Questions

Cadman Foundation provides adoption assistance grants, mostly to families adopting from overseas. We do this primarily through grants made possible by funds that family and friends raise on their behalf.

"Do you help with any adoption?"
We primarily focus on international adoptions.
"How are adoption grant amounts determined?"
Adoption grant amounts are based on a combination of the needs of the child, cost of the adoption, financial situation of the family, and the family's fundraising efforts. And because every child in need of adoption is a member of a charitable class, our program seeks to make it possible for any child who needs a family to be adopted.
"Is the financial ability of the family to make the adoption considered?"
Yes, although it is the child, not the family, who is the ultimate member of a charitable class and recipient of fundraising grants.
"When will adoption expenses be paid?"
Adoption expenses will only be paid after the family has a completed home study. However, we encourage adopting couples to begin contacting family and friends about their adoption plans as soon as possible.
"When will we receive a check?"
You won't. Funds from adoption grants will only be made to an adoption agency, home study agency, etc., and not to the adopting family.
"How much will I save on my taxes?"
Adopting families may not donate money toward their own adoption expenses and receive a tax deduction. Only their family, friends, co-workers, and others may receive a tax deduction.
"Does my adoption agency qualify?"
Yes, so long as they are licensed and do not discriminate based on race, creed, or ethnic group.

To comply with all IRS requirements, a donor may not retain control over how the Cadman Foundation ultimately uses the donated funds. Cadman Foundation retains discretion and control over the use of all donations. Our adoption grant review committee will consider the request, but the ultimate authority regarding the disposition of the funds raised is at the discretion of the Cadman Foundation. After considering the needs of the child, the cost of the adoption, and the financial situation of the family we will determine a grant amount for the family. Any funds raised in excess of those needed for adoption expenses that Cadman Foundation covers will be used to assist other families with their adoption expenses.

Should a family decide not to follow through with their plans to adopt, contributions raised through their efforts do not belong to them in any way. Those funds would be given as grants to other families working with the Cadman Foundation. Agencies will be required to sign a contract that guarantees any money distributed into an account for the adoptive family that is subsequently not used will be returned to the Cadman Foundation.
